Future Stars: Jungle (XL Recordings)

It’s only January but we might have already found the most pretentious new act of 2014. After playing the “mysterious” (i.e. we’re actually quite old/ugly so we won’t post any photos) card for a few months, BBC Sound of 2014 nominees Jungle have recently revealed their true identities with the self-consciously eccentric photo above. They’re a duo (presumably the two at the front) but perform with a full band. Their latest single The Heat isn’t as unlistenable as its description as “tribal funk” suggests, and sometimes it’s almost catchy, but it’s too try-hard to be fun. Expect to see Radio 1 trying to make them happen this year, and lots of festival appearances (The Great Escape and SXSW are announced so far).
