New Pop on the Block

Rebound! – Hurricane (Listen)
I don’t know how to feel about this new duo, which consists of Eddie and Rabih from Sweden’s last Idol series. I’m delighted to see Eddie releasing music, but Rabih was one of my least favourites so I’m annoyed it has to be with him. Still, it probably does give them a better chance of success to team up. Hurricane is a blatant RedOne wannabe, but it improves as it goes along and I did find myself wanting to hear it again immediately after my first listen. Swedish pop can be so much better, but I do love cheap R&B pop (as long as it’s catchy) so I hope they do well. It is far better than winner Erik’s dull and out-dated new single after all. Plus there will be the interesting dynamic of one being straight, the other gay – sadly so far they seem to be singing about girls, unless Eddie’s boyfriend wears high heels.

Stan Walker – Unbroken (Listen)
I absolutely loved his debut single Black Box (surely the best Idol winner’s single of all time? I can’t think of a better one) but I didn’t have high expectations for the follow-up. It’s always the second single of an Idol winner which really tells us what we can expect from them. Predictably, Unbroken is nowhere near the quality of Black Box, but it’s a fairly good R&B pop ballad with lots of wailing and oh-ohs, as the genre demands. The unfortunate truth is that Stan’s never going to make it as an international superstar with a face like his, but Unbroken is good enough to keep his fans happy. It has grown on me with more listens, as at first it seemed a bit messy – a trait it shares with some of the best pop songs ever (e.g. Battlefield, Biology) so perhaps it will even become a favourite in time.

  1. I wasn’t too keen on “Hurricane” to begin with, but it is very catchy and has grown on me, even though I hate that auto-tuned sound with a passion at the moment.

Totally agree with you about the Eddie/Rabih combination: I loved Eddie in “Idol” and didn’t like Rabih at all, but if it’s the only way we’re gonna get music released by Eddie then I guess we’ll have to take Rabih in the ‘buy one get one free’ promotion 🙂

  3. Hurricane has grown on me, I do quite like it. And yes you are right that it is far better than the winners single…

Shame we have to take rabih with Eddie. it’s Sam and mark all over again. Ok that was a bad comparison, but you know what i mean 🙂

  5. It does get catchier but I’m not a fan of the ending…. It doesn’t really stand out too much though- I’ve heard most of the beats before in other songs…. It’ll be interesting to see how far they get.
