Future Stars: Basic Tape (Parlophone)

I find that a lot of electronic music in the Soundcloud era is lacking personality and a sense of fun, so Basic Tape’s lively, uplifting sound was a refreshing discovery. The French duo, Sav Milot and Ben Emard, have just signed to Parlophone, according to Record of the Day. In the tradition of French duos Daft Punk and Chromeo, their music has a strong disco influence, but it also fits with the current house-pop trend. They became known for bootleg remixes of Lana, Ellie and others, before releasing a sweet collaboration with Mozambo and Julia Church, Bright Side, which has over 2 million Soundcloud plays. Late last year they released their first single all of their own, the super-catchy and sassy Not Afraid, which reminds me of Alex Newell’s equally brilliant This Ain’t Over. Fingers crossed it will be a huge summer hit. Now the sun’s peeping out, we need some happy, singalong tunes in the charts ASAP.
