Future Stars: Nadia Rose (Unsigned)

I don’t listen to much rap music, so I think it’s a testament to Nadia Rose’s charm, wit and creativity that when I first saw her video for D.F.W.T., I instantly loved her. She’s great fun, and her feisty lyrics are full of pop culture references, but she also has a serious side in confessional moments such as her rap for SBTV about her grandmother’s death. The 22-year-old South London rapper and occasional singer has followed in the footsteps of Lady Leshurr and Little Simz to defiantly turn down a big record deal, as she revealed in a 1Xtra freestyle in November. I respect their choice, but I’d love to see a British female rapper get the opportunity to achieve international success, and I don’t see that happening without a major label to help them reach and connect with a broader audience. Nonetheless, I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of Nadia, in the UK at least.
