The 25 Most Poptastic Singles of 2011 – Part 4

The 10th Most Poptastic Single of 2011

Rihanna – We Found Love

Head of a superstar, body of a chimney sweep

Released: 22nd Sept
Writer: Calvin Harris
Trivia: Much like Example, the main problem with Calvin Harris is his attempt to be a popstar himself. This is proof that he’d be much better off behind the scenes, creating pop masterpieces for stars who can make them amazing.
Best bits: 1. We found love in a hopeless place
2. It’s the way I’m feeling I just can’t deny, but I’ve gotta let it go
3. Yellow diamonds in the light, and we’re standing side by side

The 9th Most Poptastic Single of 2011

Lady Gaga – Born This Way

The motogaga will be top of everyone’s 2012 Christmas list

Released: 11th Feb
Writer: Stefani Germanotta, Jeppe Laursen, Paul Blair, Fernando Garibay
Trivia: Born This Way was the fastest-selling song in iTunes history, selling one million copies in five days. However, as Gaga-mania has begun to fizzle out over the past year, it will be interesting to see how sales of the lead single from her next album compare.
Best bits: 1. Ooh there ain’t no other way, baby I was born this way
2. I’m on the right track baby, I was born to be brave
3. My mama told me when I was young, we are all born superstars

The 8th Most Poptastic Single of 2011

Lady Gaga – Judas

Nice bracelet

Released: 15th April
Writers: Stefani Germanotta, Nadir Khayat (RedOne)
Trivia: I loved this article suggesting Gaga was inspired by Army of Lovers when she wrote Judas. The fact that she co-wrote it with RedOne, who is Swedish and therefore definitely aware of Alexander Bard, makes me quite convinced it’s true. It’s only a shame she wouldn’t cite the group publicly as an influence so they could attract a new international fanbase.
Best bits: 1. Judas Judah-a-ah
2. I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel, but I’m still in love with Judas, baby
3. Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh I’m in love with Juda-as, Juda-as

The 7th Most Poptastic Single of 2011

Robyn – Call Your Girlfriend

Robyn gets a little too close to the fireworks

Released: 1st April
Writers: Robyn, Alexander Kronlund, Klas Åhlund
Trivia: Call Your Girlfriend, a single released when most thought was Robyn was ready to move on to her next album, has turned into one of her biggest hits. It’s been playlisted by Radio 1 and she’s performed it on shows such as Saturday Night Live and Jimmy Kimmel in the US. It even inspired one of the year’s biggest viral video hits in Swedish group Erato’s creative cover version.
Best bits: 1. The only way your heart will mend is when she learns to love again
2. But you just met somebody new, and now it’s gonna be me and you
3. And then you let her down easy

The 6th Most Poptastic Single of 2011

Tove Styrke – Call My Name

The 80s are back AGAIN??

Released: 19th August
Writers: Unknown
Trivia: Swedish pop stars aren’t great at giving out clear information to their international fans, so it’s uncertain how soon we can expect a second album from Tove and whether this will be on it. I’m hoping she’ll do the typical Swedish thing and spring it upon us without warning. Next week? Yes, that sounds good to me!
Best bits: 1. Ohhh when you call my name
2. I’ll be waiting, this ain’t over
3. I’ll be two steps, two steps, I’ll be two steps over
