Song of the Week: Broods – Free

I’ve always wanted to like New Zealand sibling duo Broods, especially with their connection to the brilliant Lorde, and I’m pleased to say they’ve finally got me on board with their new single, Free. It represents them coming out as a pop band at heart, after a few years of skirting around the edges of the pop world while staying safely in the indie blog scene. Much like Royals, Free sounds fresh and unique from first listen, not fitting exactly in any genre. It starts with an acapella chant, builds up with heavy electronic sounds, and finally arrives at a poptastic chorus. As with Best Coast last year, some of Broods’ fans aren’t too keen on their change in direction, but for me it’s a long-awaited triumph.
