On Tuesday This Must Be Pop Live returned to Queen of Hoxton in London for a night of live pop music, featuring three very talented female artists.
First on stage was the lovely young songstress from the South Coast, Jerry Williams. She played a mix of tracks from her EP A Hairdressers Called Sids, new original songs and a couple of unexpected covers: Waves by Mr. Probz, and Bump ‘n’ Grind by R. Kelly. I heard comparisons from audience members to Gabrielle Aplin and Ellie Goulding, and I think Jerry has what it takes to follow those artists into the charts.
With Rothwell, it’s all about the vocals, so she keeps it simple on stage with an acoustic guitar to accompany her heartfelt songs. She does tender moments just as well as the more powerful, emotional ones, and performed some new material that shows what we have to look forward to from Rothwell in the future. Since hearing it live on Tuesday, I have had her new single Darling firmly stuck in my head.
For the finale of the night, we had Sophie and the Bom Boms bringing the party tunes, all the way from Los Angeles. Lead singer Sophie Stern was joined on stage by David Elevator, her producer and main Bom Bom. They played tracks from their debut EP The Schmixtape, plus current single Power and a few new tunes I hadn’t heard before too. Their music is bursting with attitude and energy, and they’re definitely ones to watch.
