I first came across folk singer Marika when scouring MySpace for new talent around 2009. I was impressed with her teenage talent and natural, earthy prettiness, but she didn't fit with the pop projects I was working on at the time. I forgot about her until more recently, when I began receiving incessant PR emails about her, bizarrely from three different agencies. Unfortunately, whoever is paying for all this effort hasn't convinced her to write any catchy tunes, but she could still be a crossover star. In her videos, particularly the bizarre Cannibal, she has an unusual moody magnetism, and her latest single Bath Is Black was premiered by Zane Lowe on Radio 1.
