Macklemore (born Ben Haggarty) is a rapper who has been around on the US scene since 2000, but his breakthrough success came this year when he released The Heist, his first collaborative album with singer/producer Ryan Lewis. Amazingly, considering it was self-released with no support from a major or even an indie label, it reached no. 1 on iTunes and no. 2 on the Billboard album chart. I can see their hit single Thrift Shop doing very well in the UK, with its retro backing music, catchy chorus, silly video and clever lyrics. Meanwhile, their gay marriage anthem Same Love (recently performed on Ellen) shows depth which will make the album a hit.
