Future Stars: Jade Bird (Glassnote)

It’s been nice to see some British country artists achieve success in the past few years, but it’s hard to truly love bands like The Shires and Ward Thomas because they’re performing in a style which just doesn’t make sense without a southern American accent (and the personality and songwriting skills to match). I always felt that a more folky or bluesy take on the genre would work better for a British artist, and Jade Bird is just what I had in mind. I had her down as a sleepy, introverted singer-songwriter, and hadn’t paid her much attention until she unleashed her new single Lottery earlier this month. It’s a lively, sassy song with a strong chorus and an even better middle eight. The 20-year-old Brit recorded her debut EP Something American in the US, and has already had some attention over there, including performances at SXSW and on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
