This week I’ll be chatting to each of the performers so you can get to know them a bit better before the show. First up is 19-year-old singer-songwriter, Jerry Williams…
How would you describe your music in 5 words?
Young, Quirky, Narrative, Conversational and Honest
As a young artist still in your teens, do you think you have to work harder to be taken seriously?
If you’re passionate and hardworking with what you’re doing, then I think at any age you can be taken seriously! It’s hard work starting out completely unknown and trying to build up a profile of yourself as an artist. Where I am young, I’m pretty new to the way of the music industry. However, I’m learning things everyday and it’s helping me understand what to do and how hard you have to work to be taken seriously.
What have you learned from the experience of collaborating with other songwriters?
I’ve learned how other writers think and how ideas can bounce off each other. It has really helped me understand my own songwriting skills and what is best for me to do when I’m trying to be creative. I’ve had amazing sessions and difficult sessions, but it’s all part of the experience. I find it so crazy to think that a song, lyric or melody may not have ever been written if you hadn’t crossed paths with that certain writer. It’s an exciting feeling when you click with someone and you write a song you both love.
Have you had anyone turning up at your gigs expecting the Swedish rock singer Jerry Williams?
Haha! Not yet! I’ve had a few people say that he comes up when you type ‘Jerry Williams’ into Google or iTunes, so it’s sometimes hard to find my music. People sometimes expect me to be a boy because of my name and I’m like ‘Nah, I’m a girl’ haha! I hope I haven’t disappointed any Jerry Williams fans who thought the Swedish rocker was playing but then realised it’s me, a small girl with a guitar!
What can we expect from your performance at This Must Be Pop Live?
Me, my guitar and my honest songs about growing up in Portsmouth, my friends and their feelings, things people say, new experiences, and boys. Also, I’ve been told I tend to do little dance-like leg movements when I play live, so you could probably expect that too!
