Future Stars: Grades (Warner Music/One More Tune)

I wasn’t that into garage music when it was big around the turn of the century, but I’m enjoying the current revival of the garage sound. I’ve been obsessed with Blonde’s new single I Loved You, which has a garage feel, while All About She’s top 20 hit Higher made me miss Mis-Teeq. Last week I discovered a new garage-pop favourite, the forthcoming single by British producer/remixer Grades, previously best known for his remixes of tracks by Brandy, Lana Del Rey and Aaliyah. Crocodile Tears is an angsty yet catchy tune with girly vocals that will remind you of retro garage hits like Flowers by Sweet Female Attitude. There are so many producer-artists making house and garage music at the moment, the barrier to success is raised higher, and that means the songs have to keep getting better. Grades could be onto a winner with Crocodile Tears, but he’ll need a few more like this to prove he has long-term potential.
