Future Stars: Gin Wigmore (Mercury Records)

New Zealand is producing some brilliant female artists at the moment. I’ll save my other recommendations for a future Future Pop, but the one who seems to be closest to the cusp of international success right now is Gin Wigmore. 26-year-old Gin (real name Virginia) is described as a mix of Amy Winehouse and Pink. She's an edgy, grown-up pop artist with a distinctive voice and look, and five years after her NZ debut, she released her latest album in the US this month. Her singles Man Like That and Black Sheep have both appeared in major UK adverts. The sound is a little derivative, but when the songwriting is good I don't think that matters.
