Lists of artists to watch in 2016 have been appearing across the internet over the past few weeks, and a handful of pop acts such as Alessia Cara and Dua Lipa are deservedly included. However, history has shown that the biggest pop stars rarely get a namecheck in these lists. Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber never got a mention, yet The Twang and Delphic made the top three of the BBC Sound poll, while the Brits and BBC panels were both confident of the success of Michael Kiwanuka.
Today I’m launching a new poll which I hope will help to redress the balance, and it’ll be fun to see the results. I’ve selected 10 of the most promising acts I’ve featured in my Future Pop mailer, and it’s up to you to vote for who you think, and who you hope, will be the biggest stars of 2016. There are no restrictions on what the artists have done before. If they’re a new act by any definition, they are eligible. The only rule is that they must be pop.
The 10 nominated acts will be announced over the next two weeks on This Must Be Pop, starting today, and the vote will open on Friday 18th December. The results will be announced in the first Future Pop of 2016, on 4th January. Make sure to follow on Twitter and Facebook for updates, and let me know what you think of the nominees.
