If you like Camila Cabello’s Never Be The Same, you’ll probably be a fan of Sasha Sloan too. She co-wrote the Camila track, and if her own material is anything to go by, she had a major influence over its sound and lyrics. 22-year-old Sasha, born Alexandra Yatchenko, is based in LA but has a British manager and is signed to a German label. As well as writing for the upcoming albums by Dua Lipa, Sigrid and Anne-Marie, Sasha has been building a reputation as a singer by featuring on dance tracks, most notably Kygo’s This Town. After a few years of performing as Sasha Yatchenko, she switched to Sloan and since last year, has released a series of solo singles. Sasha’s songs are thoughtful ballads with an electro twist. Her vocals are quiet and measured, but underlying pop melodies prevent her music from being too introverted. I love the Lana-esque Runaway, while Normal reminds me of Alessia Cara’s Here and Tove Lo’s Habits with its relatable party-themed lyrics. Sasha already has over 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and I see that number rising quickly.
