Soundcloud may still be a lot smaller than YouTube, but for indie and electro artists its power can’t be underestimated. One example is OctaHate, the quirkily-named debut from American indie-pop singer Ryn Weaver (real name Aryn Wuthrich), which passed 1 million plays in just three weeks. As far as musical quality, the impressive stat is totally deserved. OctaHate is the most exciting and original new song of its genre since Royals. The revelation that it was co-written by Charli XCX and produced by Benny Blanco, and rumours that her label Friends With Secrets is a major disguised as an indie, annoyed the music snobs who were fooled into supporting a “manufactured” pop project. But it’s too late now: The song’s out there, it’s very good, and it should mark the beginning of a huge career for Ryn.
