New Pop on the Block

Avenue, Danny Saucedo and Kellie Pickler ft. Taylor Swift

Avenue – Can You Feel It (Listen)
My first thought on hearing the name of the new Avenue single was to wonder if it was a cover of the Jackson 5 hit. They’d be mad to do that, since V (another 5 piece boyband) released a quite successful version only a few years ago. It’s not exactly a cover, but the chorus is surely too similar to the Jackson 5 song to be a coincidence. I kind of like this song, but I don’t love it, and if a pop song can’t impress a pop addict like me, what hope does it have? After their debut single, Last Goodbye, completely flopped, Avenue needed to come back with something really special, and unfortunately they haven’t managed it. I was surprised to hear anything more from them at all, but perhaps they have been spurred on by the recent success of The Saturdays, to believe that the public might be in the mood for a new boyband as well. That may or may not be true, but if it is, I don’t think Avenue will be the ones to fill that role.

Danny Saucedo ft. Sasha – Emely (Watch)
I am very unimpressed with Danny at the moment. His new album has just as many good songs as his first, but the difference is that from his first album he sensibly released those good songs as the singles. With this new one, he seems to have made a list of all the tracks in order of good to bad, then started at the bottom, releasing the worst songs first. Emely isn’t terrible, really – it’s just boring! It wouldn’t bother me if it was just an average, uninteresting popstar who was releasing this, but not only has Danny released songs ten times better than this before, but he also has songs ten times better than this on his current album! It’s confusing, more than anything. Luckily, his boyband EMD have just released their best ever single, Baby Good Bye, so I will just have to listen to that instead, and put my hopes on EMD to become the great pop act that Danny currently seems determined not to be. By the way, if you’re wondering who Sasha is, she was in Poland’s Eurovision group last year, The Jet Set!

Kellie Pickler ft. Taylor Swift – Best Days of Your Life (Watch)
This is a weird one, because Taylor is obviously the more popular of these two country poppets (who became good friends when they toured together), but this is Kellie’s single, first and foremost, so Taylor is in a position of being shown off, yet simultaneously sidelined. The song is quite catchy – not as good as Taylor’s own stuff, but better than Kellie’s. The video depicts the story of the song, and it’s worth watching through to the end, not so much to see what happens to Kellie’s ex-boyfriend as to see Taylor’s hilarious reaction to it. She really has no sympathy! I know Kellie is ace after seeing her on American Idol a few years ago (she was famously sweet but stupid), and I can see why she gets on with Taylor, who seems to be a really genuine, fun young girl. It makes total sense that teenage American girls adore her, but if my newfound obsession continues they’ll have to compete with me for the title of no.1 fan!

  1. Emely is wierd actually, because their voices don’t really fit together nicely. as boring as the song is, I actually think the album version is better than this version.maybe they tried to do what they did with Therese for if only you, but this song does not lend itself well to duets….
