New Pop on the Block

A brilliant week for pop music…

Miley Cyrus and David Archuleta – I Wanna Know You (Listen)
One of my favourite songs of 2007 was Miley’s See You Again, and last year David’s Crush ranked highly in my top singles chart. This duet may not be quite as good as either of those songs, but believe me, that’s no criticism – it’s still one of my favourite new songs of the moment, and is now my 2nd favourite song by each of the popstars involved. I much prefer David to Miley and would like to hear more of him on I Wanna Know You, but this song is a great choice for their duet. It was performed on a new episode of Hannah Montana broadcast last night in the USA, and seems to be going down pretty well, so hopefully it will be a single and go on to be a big hit for them both. Before you listen to this, be warned: There’s a very catchy woah-oh bit in it that you won’t be able to get out of your head for quite some time!

Blänk ft. Young Ivy – I’m Going for Your Brother (Watch)
When I saw this video for the first time last week, I had never heard of any of the artists involved before. Therefore, when it began with a sweet female vocal and electro backing, I presumed I was hearing the latest Swedish answer to Annie, or perhaps a new Sally Shapiro, but when the rap came in halfway through I realised I was wrong. Lina may go on to make electro-pop solo aongs at some point, but for now she’s a member of Blänk, a rap/r’n’b group from the north of Sweden. Young Ivy is the rapper on the song. I think this is going to go down extremely well with my readers. It’s been in my head non-stop since I heard it and I think it’s one of the best Swedish songs of 2009 so far – which means a lot in a year of Erik Hassle and Adiam Dymott! I look forward to hearing more Blänk songs with Lina on vocal duties.

Samantha – U-Turn (Watch)
Thanks to acts like K-otic, Sita, Kim-Lian, Anouk and Elize, I used to consider the Netherlands one of Europe’s best countries for pop music, but recently I haven’t been so impressed. Luckily there’s a new Dutch act who’s hoping to resurrect her country’s poptastic reputation. Samantha’s sound is very similar to that of Elize, but I actually like U-Turn more than Elize’s latest, Can’t You Feel It. U-Turn is one of the best dance-pop songs I’ve heard in a while. The chorus is great, and I won’t spoil the surprise, but be prepared for a little shock with regards to the lyrics! It’s rather vicious but only in a fabulous and cathartic way. Just not something I want to catch myself singing in a public place! I haven’t seen this posted on any other pop blogs yet, but I have a feeling it’s going to be appearing on most of them in the next few months. Enjoy!

  1. Samantha’s song is kind of old–she’s Swedish, though, and was on Idol (well, the early stages, not the finals)! Pop Trash Addicts < HREF="http://poptrashaddicts.blogspot.com/2008/02/u-turn-burn-motherfucker-burn.html" REL="nofollow">wrote about her<>. Wouldn’t mind seeing “U-Turn” have a resurgence at all, though. It just feels like the perfect workout song.

The Blänk song is REALLY good. Thanks for the tip!

  7. Ah, I wondered if there was some backstory about Samantha and that great song, but I couldn’t find any websites for her so presumed that was just cos it was very new. I suppose she must have just released it in Holland, because it is available to vote for on http://www.kidstop20.nl, but not actually in their chart.

I’m glad you both liked Blänk’s song so much! I think it’s great too, almost hypnotically catchy.

  9. Good point, Anonymous! Obviously I am so attuned to the Swedish musical style that it always appeals to me more than other nationalities. It’s sad that the Dutch have in fact not returned to brilliance after all. Oh dear!
