New Pop on the Block

Bruno Mars – Just The Way You Are (Listen)
When I wrote about Bruno a few weeks ago I was excited about his proper debut single, and today I finally got to hear it. Upon hearing the first few seconds, I almost exploded with excitement – it was even better than I expected! These are the first few seconds of an amazing pop song! And as the first BSB-esque verse went along, I could barely contain my anticipation for the chorus. Then the chorus came, and I must admit I was a bit disappointed. The song went from glorious pure boy-pop to an anti-climactic OneRepublic-style ‘so two years ago’ chorus. Boo. I thought it was going to be Bleeding Love but it was just Apologise. However, it’s still a very good song overall and perhaps once I get used to the chorus I’ll love it as much as I first thought I might. I have no doubt it will be a massive hit.

David Archuleta – Something ‘Bout Love (Listen)
I loved David on American Idol and I loved his debut album too, especially the lead single Crush. Now it’s time for the follow-up, and since his debut was fairly successful but not incredibly so, he really has to step it up this time if he wants to secure any kind of longevity in his career. I always wanted him to do an Ola-style track, and with Something ‘Bout Love he has gone in that direction. It’s a very pleasant pop song with a strong middle 8, but considering this is about the joy of being in love I don’t really feel that joy coming through. Rather strange considering David is the happiest boy in pop. A good effort but unfortunately it’s not quite poptastic enough to get the pop fans excited or interesting enough to broaden his fanbase. I still love little Archie though and will definitely buy the album.

  1. I beg to differ…I listened to Bruno’s song and like Archuleta’s much more.

I think Something Bout Love is a great pop song, really a big surprise for most of his fans, but he hit it on the nose IMO. The stations streaming it have all had positive remarks and they hear a hit in the making. The ultimate will be hearing this live, because that’s when David Archuleta takes all music to a different level.

  3. I have to disagree – although I enjoyed David’s performances on American Idol, unfortunately all of the TV performances I saw of the songs from his debut album were very disappointing. I don’t think teen-pop songs really work for him live (he performs the ballads better), but they appeal to his fans and to me as well so I still think it’s te right genre for him to be in, but live it doesn’t work particularly well. I also find it strange that you think Something ‘Bout Love is a surprising sound for David, as it’s exactly what I’d expect him to release.

  5. The Archie single is… not bad. It’s not amazing though either. It’s what I’m terrified Shayne Ward will come back with. Something that suffices rather than blows you away…
