Could Natalie La Rose be the next international female pop star? I’m not sure, but she is currently no.1 on the Shazam US new release chart with her debut single Somebody. The sweet yet sassy R&B song features Jeremih, and like his recent hit Don’t Tell ‘Em, it borrows from the lyrics of a classic. In this case it’s Whitney’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody. The lyrics of Somebody, about meeting a boy on a night out, couldn’t be more generic and the song overall isn’t at all original, but it’s charming and radio-friendly. Although Natalie’s vocals sound like Jennifer Lopez, she’s actually Dutch, and moved to the US to pursue her dream. She was part of an Interscope duo called Amsterdam who never released any music, but got a second chance when Flo Rida signed her to IMG, his imprint of Republic Records. My Google research suggests she’s at least 25, and her mentor Flo Rida isn’t exactly Jay-Z or Pharrell, but she has a strong look, obvious determination and a song that’s about to be a big hit. It’s not too bad being Natalie La Rose right now.
