Last year everyone in the British music industry was talking about music publisher Kobalt, and the number of unsigned artists they were investing in as their AWAL label services business grew. The results of this are now becoming evident, as I’m featuring a singer who took that route for the second week in a row. Last week it was Mae Muller, and now another young British female artist, Millie Turner. 17-year-old Millie released her debut single Underwater last summer, followed by Eyes on You, The Shadow, and finally an EP last week. Her songs feature folky vocals over an electronic beat (or “folktronic” as one review aptly called it), and have attracted comparisons to artists such as Maggie Rogers. Currently studying for her A-Levels, Millie said last year that she was waiting to finish school before making a label decision, but record deals aside, it doesn’t look like her music career plans have been put on hold in any other way. She’s also popped up on all the usual online PR faves, such as Noisey, Wonderland, The Fader and Line of Best Fit, and has released several music videos.
