Considering the only British rapper to make the UK top 10 so far this year is Tinie Tempah (featured on a dance track), I was surprised recently to see an article hailing the revival of grime. However, a week later it made a lot more sense, when North London grime artist Meridian Dan powered up the iTunes chart with his new single German Whip. My research revealed that Meridian Dan has been around since the early 2000s, part of a rap group with JME, Skepta and others, who performed on pirate radio stations. After a decade of making music, Dan is on course for a top five hit on Sunday. It may or may not make him the next Dizzee Rascal, but it proves that even in the current charts, dominated by dance, pop and Pitbull, there’s still room for an underground hit to cross over.
