Sometimes a mid-tempo track can be catchier than any upbeat banger, and Maggie Lindemann’s new single Pretty Girl is a perfect example. The relatable teenage lyrics assert a strong personality and they’re memorable from first listen. It’s an ideal statement of identity for an artist who’s come from a social media background, as she sings about the many dimensions of her personality, like a sweeter-sounding version of Meredith Brooks’ Bitch for the 2010s. 18-year-old Maggie became famous on Instagram and was known for her relationship with Viner Carter Reynolds, which ended very unhappily, as well as various rivalries with other social media stars, but now she’s focusing on her promising music career. She may not be with a major label, but 300 Entertainment is a smart alternative choice – formed by ex-Warner chairman Lyor Cohen, they’ve had huge success with Fetty Wap, and have the money and influence to make Pretty Girl the radio hit it should be.
