Unsigned Month: Introducing Jin Jin & The Ragdolls

Proving that you can be funny and make good pop tunes at the same time (yes I’m looking at you, Lucy Spraggan), Jin Jin & The Ragdolls is one of my favourite new pop arrivals of 2012. Jin Jin is the pseudonym of Janee Bennett, former lead singer of Empress, and it feels like she’s finally found her true sound and style in this new incarnation. Don’t ask me who The Ragdolls are, though… I guess they’re the new Diamonds/Machine.

Wiley collaborator Bless Beats is Jin Jin’s executive producer, and he’s got the Heatwave rapper himself to feature on a remix of her next single Whistle At Me. It’s a catchy and very current track, but it’s her previous release Cashpoint Drama, featuring recent Mercury signing Mikill Payne, which I’ve been playing incessantly. The song represents a hilarious conversation between a girl and boy who both want to use the same cashpoint, with lyrics such as “At first I thought you were just quite slow, but I was wrong, now I know that you’re a psycho!”
