EO is Edwin Onokhua, a 16-year-old from London who is enjoying his first grime hit with the single German – which I was surprised to find (considering his youthful looks) was about a car, not something that happened in a German lesson at school. He is already established as a mid-sized YouTuber with 7 million views on his channel, best known for his comedy videos where he impersonates a typical African dad. This may suggest he’d be a comedy rapper like Big Shaq, of Man’s Not Hot fame, but he’s more along the lines of the new breed of cheeky and endearing grime stars like Ramz, Dave and Not3s… with added cheekiness and endearingness. He is bordering on adorable, especially when he looks so small in the huge shiny Mercedes in the video. I’ve written about so many new young male British rappers recently, it’s unlikely they’ll all have long-lasting careers, but if EO has the talent to back up his commercial appeal he’s definitely in with a shot.
