There were only about 40 people in the room to see Aurora Asknes at Where’s The Music, but she was one of the most talked-about acts among the delegates. The public may not have caught on yet, but the industry knows that Aurora has something very special. The 19-year-old Norwegian singer has been impressing tastemakers around the world at similar showcase festivals, such as by:larm in Norway, Eurosonic in Holland, and CMJ in New York. Last year she signed to three different labels: indie labels Petroleum and Glassnote for Norway and the US respectively, and Universal’s adult-contemporary label Decca for Europe. At a festival with a large contingent of female solo performers, Aurora still had no trouble standing out. I missed my favourite song of hers, Puppet, but that didn’t stop me enjoying the show. Aurora’s voice is beautiful and has a clarity and purity about it that matches her simple look and performance style. However, the maturity of her sound and talent doesn’t mean she can’t have fun too. She let loose towards the end of her set, and performed the most endearing, carefree dance break I’ve ever seen, which I luckily caught on film.
