Future Stars

Jaden is still only 13 but is already transforming from a child to a young man, looking stylish and muscular in his recent music videos, and increasingly resembling his father Will Smith. He doesn't seem to have a record deal so far, but Young Money are rumoured to be interested, and I'm sure he'll be signed soon. Whether he'll succeed is another matter – there isn't a great track record for teen rappers. Maybe it's because the best rappers have experienced tough times in their life. Having famous parents and befriending Justin Bieber isn't quite the same as having your jaw wired shut or growing up in a trailer park.

Ella McMahon is a 17-year-old singer who shares the same management as pop-rock group Twenty Twenty, but seems to be more of an R&B singer with Lauryn Hill and Nneka cited as influences. She has had a busy few weeks, signing to Warner Chappell for publishing and EMI for records soon after. There's no music online so far, or photos except the above and this tiny one, but her bio on Soundcloud says she studied at the Brit School and comes from a Jamaican/Maltese/Scottish family. She's been working with Scandi producers Cutfather and Deekay on her new music so she's definitely one to watch.

Lucy Rose only announced her deal with Columbia a few weeks ago, but the signing was a pretty safe bet for the label as she's already quite a success. Lucy makes indie-folk-pop with sweet vocals and intelligent lyrics. Laura Marling is the most obvious reference point, and fans of Bombay Bicycle Club (who have a strangely large teen fanbase) will also be on her side as she has appeared on several of their songs. I don't think Lucy will be topping the singles chart any time soon and you won't hear her songs on Capital FM, but her album (out in September) is sure to do well and I'd be surprised if she didn't end up with a Mercury Prize nomination.

Future Hits

My future hit predictions for this week are five very British dance tracks:

Tracklisting:
  • Wiley ft. Ms D – Heatwave
  • Fazer – Killer
  • Calvin Harris ft. Example – We'll Be Coming Back
  • The Other Tribe – Skirts
  • Sam and the Womp – Bom Bom
Thanks for reading – I'll be back next Monday with more Future Pop! In the meantime check out This Must Be Pop for loads more like this and don't forget to email and tweet me with your thoughts on the songs and artists above, and any suggestions for next week. Plus it would be great if you could spread the word about Future Pop to anyone you think might enjoy it and encourage them to subscribe for more.
