This Must Be Pop Live

Exciting news for London pop fans: After the success of the first three events, This Must Be Pop Live is going to be monthly from now on! We're also moving to a new, bigger venue, Queen of Hoxton. Performing at the next gig on April 16th will be Tinashé, Bright Light Bright Light and HandS. Find out more and get your tickets here.

Future Stars

The unique story of the original Sugababes' return is so brilliant that their first single should be a hit whatever it sounds like. However, they've also got on their side the fact that the style of music they started out with has come back into fashion in the last few years. Their record deal with Polydor was announced this week and they've been in the studio for ages now so hopefully it won't be long 'til we can hear some music from Siobhan, Mutya and Keisha and maybe even find out what the reformed trio are going to call themselves!

The outrage when singers leave surprisingly early on shows like X Factor usually lasts about a week, but Aiden has managed to keep up a disturbingly obsessive fanbase for the entire two years he's been in development since then. He's been in the studio working on his album (released later this year), some of his songs were previewed at an RCA event this week and a sampler has been circulating, but there's no music online or even official news of his record deal. He has reportedly been working with Matt Cardle and the lead singer from Athlete, so it could be terrible, but for the label to still be bothered after this much time suggests they do have something interesting to sell.

While I'm not sure that Jessica will win this year's American Idol, she's got the potential to become the first proper female pop star to be a success from the show since Kelly Clarkson. There have been country and R&B stars born from Idol since Kelly, but no other pop girls. Jessica is young, cute, confident, hugely talented and very marketable. Her performance of Beyoncé's Sweet Dreams last week showed how well she could slot into the current pop world, so I hope she gets more chances to sing current songs rather than all the old “classics” she's had to do so far.

Future Hits

For this week's playlist, here are five songs by US artists that I think could be big UK hits:

Tracklisting:
  • Nicki Minaj ft. Chris Brown – Right By My Side
  • Train – Drive By
  • Gym Class Heroes ft. Ryan Tedder – The Fighter
  • Chiddy Bang – Mind Your Manners
  • Mindless Behaviour ft. Fazer – Girls Talkin’ ‘Bout
Thanks for reading – I’ll be back next Monday with more Future Pop! In the meantime don't forget to email and tweet me with your thoughts on the songs and artists above, and any suggestions for next week. Plus it would be great if you could spread the word about Future Pop to anyone you think might enjoy it and encourage them to subscribe.
