New Pop on the Block

Menya – Oh! (Watch)
One of my favourite new acts have made their very first music video, and it shows them to be every bit as ace and fun as their music suggests. I mentioned Menya on ITG a few weeks ago, and having exchanged some e-mails with them, I feel quite invested in the project now, but I would be posting this video even if it was the first I’d heard of them. I wish I lived in New York so I could hang out with Menya. They’re having a great time throughout the video, and their clothes are super-cool as well. Anyone who likes CSS should give them a listen as you’ll definitely enjoy this, and I have a feeling the eventual Menya album will be better than the last CSS one.

Eoghan Quigg – 28,000 Friends (Watch)
As soon as some bright spark gave Eoghan a Busted song to sing on X Factor, it was clear where his career would be going. The problem is, Busted were a long time ago, and McFly are only still around because of fan loyalty and lack of competitors. Even in Busted’s heyday, the public spurned all pretenders (Freefaller, The Faders etc), and some of them even had songs with tunes. Eoghan doesn’t even have that. It’s such a mess, it’s an effort to sit through it just once. Hilariously, this song was written by James Bourne, but no, he didn’t write it for Eoghan – it’s actually a song that didn’t even make the Son of Dork album! What a way to begin a pop career, eh?

Shontelle ft. Akon – Stuck With Each Other (Watch)
The follow-up to Shontelle’s hit T-Shirt features the current favourite rent-a-rapper, Akon, but don’t expect a RedOne party stormer. It’s just T-Shirt part 2 plus Akon, and as much as I loved Irreplaceable, I am getting a bit tired of r’n’b-pop songs sounding like it without having the feisty attitude that made it special in the first place. Stuck With Each Other, just like T-Shirt, really needs a kick in the bum to get it going, because as it is, it’s pleasant, yet seriously generic and bland. Shontelle is pretty in a Rihanna-esque way, but if she was in a line-up on Never Mind the Buzzcocks I wouldn’t be able to pick her out, and she’s got a song in the charts right now!
