New Pop on the Block

Remi Nicole – Standing Tears Apart (Live version)
Her first album may not have been the biggest of successes when released back in 2007, but Remi’s been given another chance to make it as a pop star. This is the first single from her forthcoming second album, Cupid Shoot Me. It’s a much more melancholy, contemplative sound compared to her feel-good singles Rock & Roll and Go Mr Sunshine, and I must say I prefer those two to this. I like her sound and her character, but this isn’t something I’m itching to hear again. I hope it’ll be a grower, or that other people will see in it what Remi clearly does (she’s releasing it as a single, after all) and make it a hit.

The Stereo in Iris – The Theifs (Watch)
Their name makes no sense and the song title is grammatically incorrect, but nonetheless I think this Swedish indie group could do pretty well in the coming months. This song sounds halfway between the typical Scandinavian indie sound and the American indie sound, a mixture of Mew and Arcade Fire. They’re not exactly poptastic but I thought they deserved a mention anyway, as I just came across their new video and I think they could be worthing keeping an eye out for. If nothing else, we can enjoy their lovely Swedish style, their extremely cute lead singer, and their rather bizarre video, involving a naked monkey-man!
