New Pop on the Block

Sugababes – About a Girl (Listen)
I didn’t know the new Sugababes single was a RedOne production until I heard the words “RedOne… Sugababes!” at the start of About a Girl, but there’s certainly no better way to repent for Get Sexy’s sins than by releasing a RedOne song. About a Girl starts off well enough, but it’s around the 2:10 mark where the song gets dancier that it really comes into its own. If Get Sexy is typical of the Babes’ new album, About a Girl will probably be the only song I like on it, so I’d better make the most of it.

Flamboyant Bella – Get a Reaction (Watch)
Flamboyant Bella are an odd band. They have quite a large, dedicated following according to their MySpace page, but nobody else seems to know they exist – not even pop fans, and that’s a shame because they’ve made some great indie-electro-pop songs over the past few years. Their latest single is ruined a bit by a very cheap-looking video, but disregarding that I’d say it’s their most poptastic song yet. Get a Reaction is catchy and danceable in a sweet, youthful and very British way. If you haven’t heard anything from Flamboyant Bella yet, this is the perfect starting point.

Leona Lewis – Happy (Listen)
Considering Bleeding Love’s colossal greatness, my love for the leaked album track Brave, and the fact that Ryan Tedder’s last hit was the incredible Battlefield, I had very high expectations for Leona’s new Tedder-penned single, so perhaps I was just setting myself up for disappointment. Happy will please those who liked Leona during The X Factor, but I was hoping for better and the fact that I know there IS better on her forthcoming album makes it all the more frustrating! It will probably be a grower, but when I was expecting a brilliant beltathon I can’t help but be distinctly unhappy. I quite like the “don’t say victim” bit, though.

  1. Listened to the Sugababes on the way to work this morning. Apart from the first two seconds “Red Wine” bit I quite like it. Should rack them up at least another number 2 hit!

And Leona – well, it’s Bleeding Love Part 2 and I do quite like it. It grows on me with each listen which probably bodes well as the actual cd release isn’t til November!! Still does anyone pay attention to those anymore?
