New Pop on the Block

Lucy Woodward – Slow Recovery (Watch)
Well, this is upsetting. Lucy Woodward was a brilliant pop-rock songstress of the early ’00s, but unfortunately never made it big, despite being far superior to Kelly, Avril, Pink and the rest. Lucy’s kept on making music, but never had a breakthrough hit, and now she’s resorted to desperate measures – she’s gone jazz! It’s still fairly mainstream and accessible, and it’s nice to hear her showing off her great vocal abilities, but the cheeky, girl-powered Lucy of the early ’00s is long gone. Give this a miss and check out Blindsided instead.

The Stunners ft. New Boyz – Dancin’ Around the Truth (Watch)
It’s always exciting to have a new girlgroup, and there are plenty coming out this year, but The Stunners have done nothing to stand out from the crowd so far. Their name is really cringey, but their music isn’t too bad – it’s just really average. The only exciting thing about them is that they were formed by another unsuccessful early ’00s pop rock chick, Vitamin C, but you can’t see her influence on this new single. I do often like songs in this feisty r&b-pop style, but this one lacks oomph and certainly lacks catchiness.

A1 – Waiting For Daylight (Live)
As you’ve probably heard by now, A1 are back… but only in Norway so far. Thanks to having a Norwegian member, Christian, they were always very popular in Norway and have now made a successful comeback over there with some great new material. I loved their singles Don’t Wanna Lose You Again and Take You Home, which were very of-the-moment Coldplay-pop (an increasingly popular genre featuring songs like theirs and The Wanted’s All Time Low), but I’m a bit disappointed in the new single. It’s a contemplative ballad which doesn’t really go anywhere and has no power of emotion behind it. Stick with the mid-tempos please, boys!

  1. how sad that A1’s new stuff isn’t slightly more brilliant, particularly when Ben’s solo stuff was so great and even Christian had his moments…
