I keep hearing about Laura Mvula from different sources, so I thought it was time I featured her here. However, I wonder if she may be the female Michael Kiwanuka – loved by Guardian readers, but very few other people. She is certainly very talented, but there’s nothing about her music that’s particularly current, while it’s not special enough to be timeless either. She might be in the BBC Sound of 2013 list, she might get a Mercury nomination, and she’ll certainly be featured on Later With Jools Holland, but will she be a household name? I don’t think so.
