Future Stars: Izzy Bizu (Epic)

Considering teen girlband Soundgirl’s highest chart position was no.45 (unfairly – the single was very poptastic), it’s impressive that all three members went on to have solo careers. Olivia, under the name LIV, is working with Xenomania, while Little Nikki had a record deal with Columbia and some rather good songs. Izzy, now known as Izzy Bizu, recently signed to Epic, and if I had to put a bet on which girl was most likely to finally break the top 40, I think she has the best shot. When I first heard her solo material, I found it a bit affected and self-indulgent, and I’m not totally won over yet, but she’s developing into a promising young artist with a distinctive sound. Her new tracks Adam & Eve and Diamond have had support from Radio 1 and 1Xtra, and the earlier White Tiger was a blog favourite. It’s a little Corinne Bailey Rae, which seems like a dated reference, but there’s a big potential audience for that type of music if Izzy can bring it up to date.
