Future Stars: Ibeyi (XL Recordings)

Ibeyi are a new teenage girl duo, but they won’t be the next Mini Viva or Oh My! Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz are the French/Cuban daughters of Anga Diaz, a former member of the Buena Vista Social Club. They take inspiration from their heritage and mix it with a sound more expected for a cool young act, so they sit somewhere between world music and more contemporary indie/pop, sure to appeal to Guardian readers and fans of Jools Holland (they’ve already performed on Later With…). The track that got them signed to XL in 2013 was Mama Says, which follows the trend for unusual percussion, with Naomi using hand clicks and a cajon to keep the beat, which makes a powerful impression combined with Lisa-Kaindé’s strong, smokey vocals. Their debut album is due out in February, and they’ll play four UK gigs that month.
