Future Stars: Josh Record (Virgin)

The theme of this week’s Future Pop seems to be “boring bloke makes surprisingly good song,” as Josh Record is another artist who has caught me off guard recently. I usually turn off the radio when his music is played, and purposefully avoided his set at Madame Jojo’s when I went to see Lorde, but this week I found myself unwittingly enjoying his new single (originally released on a 2012 EP), For Your Love. It’s delicate and introspective, and there is something quite lovely about the chorus melody. As with Nick Mulvey, I think Josh will see much more success for his debut album than his singles so far, but For Your Love could be a breakthrough hit. It has, after all, achieved the enviable feat of being playlisted by both Radio 1 and Radio 2.
