Song of the Week: Fifth Harmony – Sledgehammer

Taken from this week’s Future Pop mailer. Click here to subscribe.

One of the great pop mysteries of the 2010s is why Fifth Harmony, the popular girlband from The X Factor US, haven’t been launched in the UK. Perhaps Syco have convinced the girls and their team that Little Mix have cornered the pre-teen girlband market and there would be no room for them here, or perhaps Sony UK are waiting for them to deliver a really undeniable hit. I thought they might go for a UK launch with their last US single, the Single Ladies-esque BO$$, but there’s no sign of it so far. Their new single Sledgehammer is less cool, but it’s a great piece of pure pop singalong fun. It’s early Saturdays-meets-Demi Lovato – catchy and upbeat, but still leaving room for big vocal moments. It's the only song that’s managed to get stuck in my head in the past week that hasn’t been by Taylor Swift, so that’s got to be a good sign.
