Song of the Week: Chelsea Lankes – Bullet

Carly Rae Jepsen’s E*MO*TION was undoubtedly the most popular new album among the adult pop fan community last year. Although I wasn’t as obsessed with it as most of my Twitter pals, the album soundtracked many journeys around London for me last summer, and I’m pleased that Carly’s sweet retro-pop sound is having an influence on new artists hoping to achieve the same critical acclaim. This must have been the intention when Chelsea Lankes recorded Bullet, a new track she has premiered ahead of the release of her self-titled EP in April. In fact, as she sounds so similar to Carly vocally, it could easily be mistaken for an offcut from E*MO*TION. Chelsea is a Texas-born, LA-based singer-songwriter who’s been building a following on Soundcloud for the past two years. Her first release, Ghost, has over half a million plays, and she also gained recognition in the electro scene with a feature on RAC’s 2015 single Can’t Forget You. Bullet looks set to be another online hit, surging past her previous two releases with almost 50k plays in the first ten days. Considering Carly failed to achieve chart success with this sound, even with a major label and previous hits to her name, I can’t see Chelsea managing it either, but she’s certainly on track to become the next Pitchfork-approved pop star.
