Future Stars: Atom Tree (Unsigned)

Glasgow probably isn’t the first place you’d think of to look for the next big thing in electro-pop, but maybe it should be. Apart from the obvious recent triumph of Chvrches, they have a track record with acts like Bis and Franz Ferdinand, and a few more up-and-coming acts such as Kloe and Prides. Glaswegian duo Atom Tree are continuing the tradition, though they don’t sound like any of those bands. Their single Body starts out with a cool electro vibe, but takes an unexpected turn and becomes an upbeat poptastic dance tune. It reminds me of Florence’s collaborations with Calvin Harris, or Dua Lipa on a good day. And since Atom Tree describe their sound as “future pop”, how could I not feature them here? I only heard of them a few weeks ago, but in fact they’ve been around since at least 2013 (though they still look very youthful now), when they released instrumental single Die For Your Love, and it seems they were previously a trio. Body became a Hype Machine hit when it premiered on Soundcloud in May, and last week was finally released to stream and download. According to “industry sources,” they’re now working on new music with some big name pop producers, so they’re certainly worth keeping an eye on. If you’re London based, you can see them live next month at Gold Dust.
