Last week I introduced Felix Jaehn, the new Robin Schulz, and now we meet Matoma, the new Kygo. Like Kygo, he’s a young Norwegian DJ known for his tropical house remixes, and whether or not Kygo’s work had a big influence on Matoma, his success (along with Klangkarussell, Klingande and others) surely influenced Warner’s decision to sign and promote Matoma. Tom Stræte Lagergren, aka Matoma, was discovered a year ago when his remix of a little-known Notorious B.I.G. track called Want That Old Thing Back, featuring Ja Rule and Ralph Tresvant, became a Hype Machine hit. Matoma’s version, Old Thing Back, was officially released this year and has reached the top 10 in Norway and Sweden. The track has amassed an enormous 67 million plays on Spotify and 192,000 Shazam tags, and I think it could be one of this year’s crossover Euro hits. The label also seem to see Matoma as more than a one hit wonder, as he has a properly credited feature (sharing space with Jennifer Lopez) on Try Me, a track he produced for fellow Warner artist Jason Derulo's new album.
