Olly Murs – Please Don’t Let Me Go (Listen)
This is a rare treat – an X Factor contestant who’s actually releasing exactly the kind of single he should be! It’s a mid-point between Will Young and Swedish singer Vincent and could also be compared to Tyler James (remember him from the mid-00s?). It’s a good fit for his voice and personality and a very current sound as well. It’s a great summer radio track and I think it could actually be a hit. It’s interesting to note that, like JLS, Olly is not being managed by the people who usually take on X Factor contestants, and I think this will turn out to be a blessing for him as whoever has taken him on has clearly taken a more creative and 2010-appropriate approach. I really hope I’ll be able to say the same about lovely Joe McElderry, my fave in X Factor 2009, but my hopes aren’t high.

Same Difference – Shine On Forever (Photoframe) (Watch)
It was really sad that Same Difference, unlike Olly, weren’t managed well after X Factor. They released a brilliant pop album, but sadly it was outdated and didn’t appeal to the kids of the late ’00s. Without a TV show (why didn’t CITV give them one?) they just didn’t work. Now they’re back but with a new, more dance-pop style, and although I quite like their new single I don’t think it’s going to resurrect their career. The song is catchy but a little too obviously ripping off Don’t Stop Believing, and their attempts to be sexy in the video just don’t feel right (although they both look great). It’s so sad that such cute, exuberant and talented performers can’t make it in the pop industry, but I think the main problem is that happiness just isn’t cool, and even children care worryingly much about what’s cool these days.

I am really surprised by the Olly single. Much more enjoyable than I expected, and I’m glad for that. I like the Same Difference as well, but not as much as some other folks out there.
BTW, changed my Twitter to @PopMusicNotes.

Would I be one of those folks JOhn ? 😛 I unashamedly love it but it is like it was made for me, and I’m niche with this late 90s pop fetish 🙂 Olly, I’m disgusted with myself for liking so much!
Jessica – did you do pride? We were stuck in traffic for most of it, turned round came home. Had forgotten my phone too 🙁

Paul – I did go for a little bit, saw Waterloo and Same Difference. It was scorching hot and packed in the square. Shame you didn’t make it, let me know when you’re in London again.

Your INCORRECT with your point about Olly Murs and JLS not being managed by the same X Factor people when they are still under Modest Management like Alexandra and Joe. They are all under the same boat. Please refer to the website: http://www.modestmanagement.com/
I am hoping the best for Joe. He was my favorite too.

Oh no, I’m INCORRECT! Well, change management to label division and the story’s the same. Both acts have been musically positioned in a way that’s appropriate for 2010 and will not alienate their fanbase. Olly’s single seems to have even won over quite a few people who didn’t like him on X Factor!
