Speeding Cars is the current single from Irish band Walking On Cars, and it grabbed my attention when I heard it on Radio 2 recently. First I thought it was a new Busted song, as the lead singer sounds remarkably like Charlie Simpson, and it actually would be a very smart comeback for them. Then I found out it was by Walking On Cars, and was amazed at how well they’d progressed since I caught them at a festival in 2013 (in fact, it was the tragically dull, but equally Irish, Little Green Cars that I saw). And then I finally got around to appreciating this radio-friendly rock song with a catchy chorus and a heartfelt performance. The strange irony is, after waiting years for a rock band people might like, Radio 1 aren’t playing it. Even Capital have given it a couple of plays, but Radio 1 are nowhere to be seen! Speeding Cars appears on Walking On Cars’ debut album Everything This Way, which topped the Irish charts last year, and also features previous singles Catch Me If You Can and Always Be With You. The group was tipped for success in 2016 by VEVO and they’ve been working hard at breaking the UK, supporting James Bay and The Script before embarking on their own headline tour, including a gig last week at Koko.
