Most of the blog posts about Vic Mensa highlight his connection to fellow Chicago rapper Chance the Rapper, but he may be about to achieve what Chance has so far failed to do. His new single Down On My Luck is on course to become a UK chart hit. The song, which has been playlisted by Radio 1 and is rising up the Shazam chart, represents a change in direction for Vic. The vocals are more sung than rapped, a bit like the style Drake is known for, and the song is more of a dance track than hip-hop. It’s clearly intended to be a crossover hit, when you compare it to his previous releases such as Orange Soda. The fun Groundhog Day-style music video should also help Vic to stand out and make his name.
