Chvrches are one of the biggest buzz acts of the moment, a female-fronted Scottish trio who have excited the most influential people in pop and indie. Originally known as Churches (presumably they couldn’t trademark it – it’s still pronounced the same) they put out a track called Lies a few months ago which became an online hit after it was posted on Neon Gold’s blog. The song captured people’s attention thanks to lead singer Lauren Mayberry’s distinct Scottish-accented vocals, powerful bouncing beat and great pop melodies.
At the time there was almost no information about the group available online and they had never performed live, but since then they’ve played several gigs which have been attended by many A&Rs desperate to get their signatures. Rather than signing to a major label straight away, Chvrches just released their first official single The Mother We Share through National Anthem, the same independent singles label that put out Haim’s pre-Polydor EP Forever. Amazingly, it’s equally as good as Lies and cements them as my favourite new electro-pop group. With all the buzz around them they’re sure to sign a huge deal soon and be on all the 2013 ones to watch lists.
