Future Stars: Sabrina Carpenter (Hollywood Records)

Disney label Hollywood Records has struggled to launch a new generation of teen acts to take over from Miley, Selena, Jo Bros and co. I always thought their music was quite weak (except for the odd classic) but their huge TV shows and films made them so famous it didn’t matter. Now Disney Channel’s ratings are in decline, Hollywood doesn’t have that huge platform for the new pop crop. Nonetheless, I’m hopeful that 17-year-old Girl Meets World star Sabrina Carpenter might be able to break the trend, after hearing her new single Thumbs. The track sounds like an updated take on the style of Selena’s When The Sun Goes Down album, which makes sense as it was co-written by the brilliant Priscilla Renea, who worked on that album too. The song appears on Sabrina’s second album EVOLution, which is out on Friday.
