2012 was Robbie Williams’ comeback year – he may not have got Radio 1 on board but nonetheless he had a huge no. 1 hit with single Candy and the album Take The Crown. He even gave Barlow a run for his money, leading a group of music stars to the Christmas no. 1 with charity single He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.
Throughout his solo career, Robbie has been known for his live shows, so there are high expectations for his upcoming Take The Crown Stadium Tour. For an artist whose career seemed to be in jeopardy just a few years ago, the return to performing at stadiums is a sure sign that he’s won back the British public. But to make sure he fills all the seats, Robbie’s invited his friend and natural successor Olly Murs along for the ride.
Robbie and Olly duetted on The X Factor 2009, in what could be called a career low for Robbie. He forgot the words to his biggest hit single Angels live on TV, leaving starstruck Olly to fill in the gaps. It seems the performance bonded the pair and now they are going to be spending three weeks travelling the country together.
As Robbie becomes an elder statesman of pop, edging closer to 40 and welcoming his first baby last year, it’s time for him to pass on his crown as Britain’s favourite male solo star to someone new. By inviting Olly on this major comeback tour, you could say he is literally asking him to Take The Crown!
