New Pop on the Block

Sky Ferreira – Obsession (Listen)
It usually takes a while for a pop-hating pop singer to show their true stripes, but not Sky. She’s already complaining about her own music being too commercial and she’s not even had a hit yet! That attitude could well prevent her from having a hit at all, since she certainly doesn’t seem to possess the fun-loving personality that pop success tends to require. She reminds me of Peaches Geldof – an obnoxious teenage girl who is yet to realise that snobbery will never be cool. Her UK single One is out on Monday, and luckily isn’t likely to be a huge hit. However, her US debut Obsession actually has some potential. It’s a Ryan Tedder song that doesn’t even sound like Bleeding Love! It’s catchy, fun and sung with conviction – Sky’s a great actress cos you can’t tell she hates the song at all. Although I like Obsession, most of all it makes me sad that a great pop song has been wasted on such an ungrateful bore!

Beatbullyz – Human Nature (Watch)
Wow… Beatbullyz have come a long way since I first heard of them! You’d think it was a whole new band. Beatbullyz seemed to be the ultimate lad band, so considering excessive displays of testosterone usually makes me come out in hives, I was quite surprised to find they actually had some good songs. Last single Bounce was catchy despite the video resembling a Nuts magazine photoshoot. However, the song which made me really take notice was the fantastic ballad Pieces, which reminds me of 5ive’s Closer To Me. Hopefully that will be the next single, but for now we have Human Nature, a big orchestral mid-tempo track which sounded alright until I realised it’s basically just Embrace with a rapper. Not a good comparison! Still, I think they’ve got potential to be massive and at least they have one great song.

  1. I was worried Beatbullyz might go the way of other lad boyband (gah whose name escapes me now, they did that song that sampled Our House? And another summer song about having cheese on toast?!) and I think I may be right. Time will tell. I hope they do bigger and better next time out.

  3. Oh yes, Kid British? They had a few alright moments. I’m not sure Beatbullyz will make it, cos laddishness just doesn’t seem to be ‘in’ at the moment (thank god!), but Pieces could be a hit.
