New Pop on the Block

Booty Luv – Say It (Listen)
I’d forgotten all about Booty Luv’s existence, but they’re back with a new single from a new album, and it’s really rather good. It started off quite uninterestingly, and I thought it was going to be a rubbish generic dance song, but with the catchy chorus it becomes much more poptastic, and as the song goes along my affection for it grows. After the decline of Big Brovaz and their disasterous Making Your Mind Up attempt, it was great to see the girls go on to both poptastic aceness and success with Booty Luv. Girl power indeed! I think Some Kinda Rush is still their best song, but Say It is a close contender. I’m sure this will be one of the dance hits of summer 2009.

Johan Palm – Emma-Lee (Listen)
I can understand why Johan was popular on Idol last year, but I never enjoyed his performances. There are always so many good singers and likeable characters on Idol, that I feel like someone who is out of tune every week and difficult to listen to should not be getting votes. I also couldn’t understand why girls would fancy him when someone like Lars Eriksson was on offer! However, he is very young and his cheeky rock style made him different, so I suppose that was the reason for his popularity. Now he’s releasing his debut single, and I’m pleased to say that, since he’s not singing live and therefore manages to stay in tune, it’s not bad at all. Emma-Lee is a catchy, bouncy mid-tempo rock-pop song, better than any of Andreas Johnson or Sebastian’s recent singles, but I will definitely be avoiding hearing him sing it live.

Linda Teodosiu – Love Sux (Watch)
Last year Linda came third in season five of Deutschland sucht den Superstar, the German version of Pop Idol, and here is her debut single, which will be released next week. The sound is a mixture of Up by The Saturdays and Forgive Me by Leona Lewis, but despite both of those songs being rather good, this is decidedly not. It sounds quite messy on first listen, but that does sometimes mean it will be a grower, so I suppose I should give it a few more listens. It’s nice to see that DSDS is still going strong in Germany after 7 years. The guy who beat Linda, Thomas Godoj, has had a no.1 single and album, and the amusingly named runner up, Fady Maalouf, went to no.2 with his single, Blessed, which I actually like more than Thomas’ songs. But back to Linda: I think this will do well, and it will be interesting to find out if this was written by Ina Wroldsen.
