The season of listening to non-stop Swedish pop (also known as Melodifestivalen) is almost upon us, and I’m also visiting Sweden for a festival next month, so I’ve been getting in the mood by catching up on the latest treats via the Scandipop blog. I think the best new pop single to come out of Sweden so far this year is the drama-soaked power ballad Phoenix by Molly Sandén. It’s ridiculous in the best way, without the slightest regard for subtlety. I’ve always found Molly a bit of a pointless pop star – as one of the biggest young female singers in the Swedish charts, I’d expect more star quality and individuality. However, since leaving EMI to go independent last year, her output has improved, first with the hit single Freak and now with Phoenix.
