Future Stars: Kelela (Saint Records/Sony Music)

The BBC Sound of 2014 shortlist includes a mixture of acts with real commercial potential and "tastemaker" faves that the indie-ocracy will spend 2014 trying to convince us have commercial potential. American singer Kelela Mizanekristos is definitely in the latter camp, but that doesn't mean she has no redeeming qualities. She's signed to Solange's label Saint Records and her music combines sumptuous R&B vocals with innovative production. The Observer and Time magazine were among the supporters of her mixtape Cut 4 Me, but I find it hard to appreciate a six minute song with no vocals for the first two minutes. Even Justin Timberlake's new music isn't that self-indulgent!

    1. Are you referring to Cherry Coffee? It is a song, but I can understand why you’d be confused as there are two minutes without vocals at the start.
